STLCC Foundation Establishes Wallis Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing

The STLCC Foundation has received $1,168,750 from the Jerome and Lorraine Wallis Revocable Trust to establish an endowment fund for nursing scholarships in the name of Lorraine and Jerome Wallis.

The Jerome and Lorraine Wallis Endowed Scholarship Fund in Nursing assists STLCC students in paying for tuition, books, fees and supplies that are incurred as part of their education. It will be available beginning with the fall 2018 semester.

Karen Mayes, STLCC’s director of nursing education, said Lorraine Wallis began donating scholarship money about 10 years ago to deserving STLCC nursing students because of the nursing care her husband received many years ago when hospitalized.

“I told her she was ‘paying it forward’ to future registered nurses for the great care that she so fondly spoke of that Jerry received,” Mayes said. “It warms my heart that Lorraine recognized the value of nursing in the care of patients, especially the one patient closest to her own heart.”

Mayes noted that Lorraine Wallis visited STLCC several times, attending Nursing Pinning ceremonies, and loved speaking with students and asking them about their schooling.

“I refer to Lorraine as a Gentle Giant Star. She probably never saw herself as a giant, much less a Gentle Giant Star,” Mayes said. “I personally saw Lorraine as a Gentle Giant Star because of her kind and caring spirit, her generosity, her extreme intellect, her vibrancy, her love of people, her love of life, her humor, her interest in just everything in the world and her beautiful smile. Just being around Lorraine brightened your day.”
