STLCC-Wildwood to Conduct Benefit Hair Cutting Drive

In an effort to help women battling cancer, St. Louis Community College-Wildwood will host a charity hair cutting drive Tuesday, May 2, and Wednesday, May 3, from 12:30-2 p.m. each day.

All hair donations will support Pantene Beautiful Lengths, a campaign that encourages individuals to grow, cut and donate their healthy hair to make free wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. The wigs created through this program are donated to female cancer patients through the national network of American Cancer Society wig banks.

STLCC-Wildwood’s event is organized by the Volunteers of Wildwood campus club. Students, staff and community members are invited to participate in the event.

Dubbed “Shears for Shylo,” the event honors the memory of student Chance Whitlatch’s late sister, Shylo.

“I was seven when my big sister lost her battle to cancer,” Whitlatch said. “Although Shylo is not here with us today, we’re excited to honor her memory by hosting this event.”

Whitlatch intends to donate his hair at this event, and he hopes others will join him.

“With a simple haircut, you can make a huge difference in the life of a cancer patient,” he said.

The campus has teamed up with Salon Lofts in Ellisville for this event. Professional hair stylists will cut hair in the campus lobby. Anyone who donates their hair will receive 50 percent off a haircut at Salon Lofts after the event.

Hair donations must be a minimum of 8-inches in length. Hair also must not have any dyes, bleaches or chemicals, and must not be more than 5 percent gray.

To register for this event, contact Breana Houska at bhouska@my.stlcc.edu. Monetary donations for Pantene Beautiful Lengths also will be accepted.
