St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley and the University of Missouri-St. Louis have embarked on an effort to address the need for secondary science and math teachers in the St. Louis region.

The UMSL We Teach MO Initiative has been expanded to include a one-credit hour, tuition-free course that introduces college students considering a career in a STEM  field – science, technology, engineering, math – to the teaching profession through first-hand classroom experience. It provides an authentic, low-risk opportunity to explore science or math education before committing to a complete degree program.

The credit-hour was developed to expand the impact of the We Teach MO program and increase recruitment of potential teachers. The community college environment is ideal because students are considering their next steps after earning an associate degree.

“The intention of this agreement is to help improve STEM education in North County and the greater St. Louis region. It will help highlight the rewards of teaching STEM, and hopefully increase the number of science students choosing teaching as a profession,” said Stephen White, dean of STEM and business, STLCC-Florissant Valley.

The course will be offered in spring 2018. Interested students can complete an application in the STLCC-Florissant Valley Science and Math office, SM204, or by contacting Nicolle von der Heyde at UMSL

“This partnership is truly a win-win-win. For STLCC students, it allows them to explore another career field and provides them with a course toward graduation that they receive at no cost. For UMSL, this agreement provides an opportunity to showcase their talented faculty and excellent programs to our students. For the community, this partnership creates the potential for some of our best and brightest students to become teachers who will then inspire the next generation of scientists, mathematicians, engineers and technology experts,” said Elizabeth Perkins, provost, STLCC-Florissant Valley.
