Dion Receives Award in National Juried Art Exhibition

Dion Dion’s silver award-winning exhibit in Color.

Dion Dion, a student artist at St. Louis Community College-Wildwood, received a silver award for her installation in the national juried art exhibition, Color.

Hosted at 3 Square Art in Fort Collins, Colo., the exhibit runs through Aug. 26.

Dion is one of 30 artists from across the country featured in the exhibit. Her installation includes three paintings from her “Surfaces” series.

“All the works in my ‘Surfaces’ series focus on building an interesting surface on the painting itself, in addition to any imagery,” she said. “I accomplish this by starting with an interesting underpainting and then building on top of it with scraped or sprayed paints as well as cords, strings, handmade paper, small clay pieces and elements from nature.”

According to Dion, her decision to enter her artwork into the exhibition was twofold.

“The title of the show first attracted me since color is of major importance in my work,” she said. “I’ve been trying to get my work out into the world beyond the boundaries of the St. Louis region, and this exhibition was a great opportunity for me.”

Dion has taken a variety of art courses at STLCC-Wildwood since 2010. Outside of STLCC, she is a nationally exhibiting and award-winning artist in clay, handmade paper and mixed media sculpture (1980-1995), as well as oil paintings (2010-present).

Designated a Master Teacher of Art, she was an art educator for 15 years at the secondary level, where she designed and taught the curriculum for gifted art students and served on state teams evaluating high school art departments for state and national accreditation. In addition to this role, she has served as an adjunct instructor at Maryville University; as the director of the Emerging Artists as Entrepreneurs program for the Saint Louis Art Fair; and the visual arts chair for the Manchester Arts Board of Directors. Previously, she served for 19 years as the executive director of Art Saint Louis.

Dion has worked with a variety of non-profit arts organizations, holding positions as president and director. She has also served as a curator or juror for more than 125 local, regional and national exhibitions.
