The St. Louis Community College men’s soccer team is heading to the National Junior College Athletic Association Division 1 Tournament.
The Archers earned a place in the tournament by winning the 2017 Region XVI championship after defeating Jefferson College 2-1 on Oct. 28.
Next, the Archers will play for the Central District title against Illinois Central College at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 4, at STLCC-Florissant Valley, 3400 Pershall Road.
STLCC takes a 21-0-0 record and No. 1 ranking in the latest NJCAA weekly poll into Saturday’s contest.
The game will determine STLCC’s seed for the national tournament, to be held Nov.13-18 in Prescott, Ariz. Both teams are advancing to the tournament because the Central Region has two spots in the field this year.
Since consolidating the soccer program at STLCC, the regional title is the second championship for the men’s team, which also won in 2016.
“There is a history of success at the College pre-transition, as Florissant Valley won 10 national titles and Meramec won two national titles,” said Shawn Summe, director of athletics.
Tim Mosby, head coach, describes the experience of the team as “once in a lifetime…that we will all value.
“We will give it our all, remembering how hard it is to get this far. It’s a positive experience for all of our players and staff, and the school,” said Mosby.
