Hertel Named Semifinalist for ACF Regional Award

hertelRob Hertel, professor in hospitality studies at St. Louis Community College, has been selected as a semifinalist for the American Culinary Federation’s Central Region Educator of the Year.

The winner will be announced at the 2017 ACF Signature Series ChefConnect: Chicago Feb. 5-7.

The ACF Chef Educator of the Year award pays tribute to an active culinary educator whose knowledge, skills, expertise, guidance and direction have enhanced the image of the professional chef and who, by example, has given leadership, guidance, and direction to students seeking a career in the culinary profession. This person demonstrates the ability to help students define and develop their careers by using their skills and abilities to provide a strong foundation for their future success.

Regional winners will advance to the Cook. Craft. Create. Convention & Show in July at the Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort in Orlando, Fla.

Hertel joined the STLCC staff in 1992 as an adjunct instructor. He was hired full time in 2001.

Hertel has been named the St. Louis Chef of the Year by the Chefs de Cuisine Association of St. Louis. He is a member of the American Academy of Chefs, the honor society of ACF, which promotes the education of all culinarians by mentoring culinarians, awarding scholarships to students seeking a future in the culinary industry, and by providing grants to professional working chefs looking to further their career.  He also is a recipient of the Olive H. Sommer Mentor Award, presented annually to an ACF Chefs de Cuisine Association of St. Louis member who best exemplifies the passion for mentoring fellow culinary artists and junior association members.
