All year, Scott Goodrich believed his team was capable of becoming among the best in Region XVI. Today, he may get that validation.
St. Louis Community College will play Metropolitan Community College-Maple Woods today in a winner-take-all Region XVI Tournament final after suffering a 7-4 loss to Maple Woods yesterday. The Archers gained a game of leeway after winning their first three tournament games.
Goodrich’s Archers, who entered the Region XVI Tournament last Wednesday smarting from being assigned the fourth seed, showed Goodrich’s projection to be accurate as they plowed through their first three opponents to advance to the regional final, scoring 36 runs in the process.
“It’s a bit of an oversimplistic way to look at it, but all year, we talked about getting ourselves right for the regional tournament,” Goodrich said. “I don’t think we were happy with getting a four-seed, so as we progressed through our regional tournament, things started (coming together).”
The Archers’ most convincing victory of the tournament was a 15-3 drubbing of top-seeded Jefferson College. The Archers led throughout the afternoon, and proceeded to defeat Three Rivers 10-4 the next day to secure their spot in the tournament’s championship game.
“I think that was one of those games where it didn’t matter who we played,” Goodrich said of the win over Jefferson. “We got a few breaks, we hit a few balls over the wall, and once the momentum got going, we were on our way.”
Seth Mesey will get the ball this afternoon. It’s been a season of progression for Mesey, as two of his best performances have come in the past two weeks. He pitched the Archers to a win over Crowder College in the last home stand of the year for STLCC, before delivering the an 11-3 win in the Region XVI opener, also against Maple Woods.
“He threw really well against Maple Woods on Wednesday, so we need to make some plays behind him and take care of business,” Goodrich said.
Due to early morning rain, Goodrich projected the start time of today’s game as just after 1 p.m.
